The United Nations

A UN Ministerial Conference on global road safety is one of the key recommendations of the Commission for Global Road Safety, published in the June 2006 Make Roads Safe Report.   The Commission, under the leadership of Lord Robertson, former NATO Secretary-General, recommended convening a worldwide conference to mobilize political and public support to reduce the worldwide road traffic fatality and injury rate, particularly in developing nations. The Global Road Safety Forum worked with Ambassador Fuad Al-Hinai, the Oman Ambassador to the United Nations, and the World Health Organization (WHO), to introduce a resolution on Global Road Safety during the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly on March 31, 2008.  The resolution called for a UN Ministerial Conference on road safety in 2009.  In preparation for the General Assembly Session, GRSF provided background data and information to explain the Resolution, and organized a briefing on global road safety for General Assembly attendees.
